It's Been a While....

Phil Ball writes his observations following his recent visit back to WTA: ‘During my recent visit to Lukomera I had a chance to step back for a moment and reflect on the journey taken at WTA, the Rock and with both Connect Centres..'
All of us, whether we are ServeDirect or friends of it and no matter the level of involvement, have helped take a piece of scrub land that needed clearing by prisoners, and help turn it into a community that is increasingly self assured.
It is not only that the infrastructure has improved in quantity and quality, but those benefiting are taking ever increasing care to use the facilities positively. However, providing buildings and equipment was never the goal, but rather creating environments where all are valued, protected and afforded opportunities to develop. Signs of this can be readily observed in the quality and enthusiasm of teachers, their ability and confidence to question ideas and suggestions in a positive manner and the informality and friendliness of conversations they have with pupils as they move around the school. In response, the pupils are open to new ideas, but again happy to question and raise ideas of their own. This is all supported by a facilities team who make sure the site remains secure, tidy and maintained.
Of course this may have never been achieved without the continual presence of Charles Opio who originally established a safe haven for a small group of pupils when he had no funds or support, just a humble vision of what was possible. In a world where things are ever changing, the value of someone committed to a single cause should never be underestimated.
If you haven’t had a chance to visit in a while, or have never yet made the decision, do give it a go. You will be welcomed into a vibrant community, and are bound to be given a list of things to do that you are not prepared for at short notice - of course the place is more fun because of it!
